Tom & Shirley's Page -- 2005 Austria Trip
In the fall of 2005 Shirl and I went to Austria. Past trips had been made with seasoned travelers, this trip we did by ourselves. Our past companions were good tutors as this trip came off without any real glitches! We loved Austria.
We started out in Vienna, an absolutely enchanting city. It is super clean, safe, vibrant and chock full of interesting things to see and do. We enjoyed everything, especially the concert at the Schonbrunn. We decided we certainly need a return visit.
We were then off to the Wachau valley for a few days. We stayed at a wine farm outside of Krems. In contrast to bustling Vienna the Wachau was laid back which gave us a chance to catch our breath. We enjoyed the gently rolling hills, the wines and especially dining with the locals off the beaten path.
Our stay in the Salzkammergut region, in Hallstatt, was the highlight of the trip. The mountain scenery blending into the lakes is simply awesome. We will surely revisit this area again, hopefully sometime soon.
Salzburg was the last of the big cities in Austria we visited. It indeed has its own charm, old town and Mozart mania was interesting, but it was not as vibrant as Vienna.
We ended this lovely vacation with a five-day stay in Munich, meeting up with some of our friends at Oktoberfest on one of the days.

Shirl enjoying a serenade outside our Pension Nossek on the Graben Vienna's Naschmarkt View of Durnstein from above at the castle ruins
Biking between towns on the Rhine Andrea, inn-keeper of Weinbau Rethaller, near Krems. Nice place to stay. View from our room overlooking the Hallstattersee

Our hostess Helga Lenz-a wonderful place to stay while in Hallstatt. European markets are so interesting. This one in Salzburg near the cathedral. View above Salzberg from the old Fortress
Look closely for the McDonalds sign in Salzburg's Old Town In Salzburg our hostess was Trude Poppenberger. We can recommend Trude's. Fish on a stick-an Oktoberfest favorite. Really quite good.
In one of the Oktoberfest tents before it really got crowded. Enjoying a drink. We stayed across from the Oktoberfest grounds at Pension Westfalia Biking through the Englischer Gardens in Munich
